I need to change the glowplugs on my 1994 E300D Estate. It's the six cylinder non-turbo engine.

I can't for the life of me work out how to remove the inlet manifold. I've removed all the obvious bolts but it's still firmly attached. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

There is a support frame under the manifold held in with three bolts, two on the manifold and one by the engine mounting

Before you try to remove the glow plugs have a read of the numerous comments on this forum about the job

Thanks for the replies guys.

It's the bit that goes across the rocker cover that I can't get off. Looking at the diagram, it appears that I have removed all the bolts. Just need to hit it harder I suppose. How hard should I need to hit it? I was a bit cautious because it doesn't look very strong.

I've seen all the other posts about this job thanks. I once had a glowplug snap off when trying to remove it (not on a merc though). Not funny. Had to remove the head and drill it out.

Incidentally, does anyone know where I can get a proper workshop manual. I find The Haynes manual is not very useful.

You'll find this place is better than any workshop manual you could find :) And its free!

With reference to the picture posted by Malcolm, part number 77 is held on by 4 bolts ( 10mm on mine), remove these and then remove the (un shown ) exhaust coupling from item 77. This too, is a 10mm bolt, and connects item 77 to the exhaust manifold via a flexible tube.
This will allow you to pull item 77, from the the end of the intake manifold that goes over the rocker cover. The rubber O rings on either end of this part are a tight fit, however, you should be able to lever the item out, without resorting to a hammer.

Hope this helps,

Andy,

I think that must be the step I was missing. I will have another go at the weekend and report back next week.
