Obviously, good W124 estates of a certain age, condition and spec are desirable cars, and priced accordingly, but even I winced when I saw this.

This dealer must be just testing the water right?

Funnily enough I saw this advert a few days ago and swore out loud at the asking price!!

It might be a very, very nice car, but that price is OTT and it doesn't even have leather. Nick Froome at www.w124.co.uk, who sells some cracking estates, has never asked a figure anywhere near that. I would be interested in his response.

For that money you can buy a low mileage, high spec W210 e320 cdi from a dealer with warranty/mobilolife etc or a higher mileage early W211 estate.

It seems as usual If you put the word CLASSIC in the name of your dealership it's a license to pick a number and treble it when pricing things.
Even better if the surround to the ad is classic green... check out ads in clasic and sportscar magazine and you will know what I mean lol.

I can just imagine the discussion the previous owner had when he went to the dealer to trade it in.
Very nice car squire; pity it`s that model, most customers want the *****
I know it`s very low mileage but that does not enhance the trade in price i`m afraid.
If only it was in a different colour.
Cloth upholstery, what a pity.
We are finding the large models are sticking on our forecourt these days.
I have to say it`s age is againt it
Tell you what, as you look a nice old gent I will give you fifty quid over Glasses trade in price for it despite the dog hairs on the back seat.
Sorry thats my best price, I will probably make a loss moving it on.

Be funny if someone pinched it. You imagine trying to convince the insurance Co it was worth £13K. They'd be in fits

Now - W210 E320cdi
The price really is rather optimistic isn't it, I hope someone doesn't actually end up paying this much!

On the other hand the only true value of anything is whaterver people are willing to pay. If you look on W124 web site you will see what people have actually been paying for these in good condition. Whatever other forum members think in terms of value you will see that really good cars are selling for 6-8 thousand with 2 or 3 times the mileage.

I'm sure for this particular car it will just come down to how much premium someone is willing to spend to get the particular spec combined with the very low milage and Merc FSH - its anybodys guess as to what that is worth?

But a different way to look at it is that if you wanted a quality large estate car that you could run at reasonable cost and do 10000 miles a year and would realistically last for up to 20 years (or more) with regular servicing and maintenance, could you do better than this at any less cost? Certainly the average W124s that are out there in the classifieds for a few thousand quid are not in the same league interms of mileage or body condition. Having recently sold my ownE280 estate (which was in excellent condition and still going strong at 176K) and having monitored the market for around a year now I know that the the vast majority of stuff you see in the classifieds is no where near as good as its made out to be. It does seem that the specialised dealers do have the knack (or the contacts) to find the small number of cars that really are in 10/10 condition and they seem to be able to sell them at these ''high'' prices.

Anyway, I will continue my search for the elusive W124 estate bargain and hopefully I will find it one day!

At that age I'd rather have a car with an engine that has a proven track record.

That car is massively overpriced for something that has only ever been to the shops and back.

On a separate note, mine is now at 199,500 miles :)

For the money being asked you could buy a W211 estate, one of the safest cars made. The problem I have with older W124 age cars is the lack of side protection. No door, seat or A-pillar airbags. Modern Mercedes have complex door beams and special steels used in the horizontal reinforcements of the sills which also make a large difference.
When I was a student I shared a flat with a medical student who had a collection of accident pathology books.Trust me, if you looked at all the gruesome photos you'd be put off buying a small or older car.

There are indeed loads of body safety features built into the 124 chassis.

These include "High-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel panels and formed stiffeners in the underbody and doors for increased rigidity.

Structural body and chassis reinforcements with ten high tensile-strength crossmembers for superior cabin protection.

Additional side impact protection consisting of two structural crossmembers beneath the front seats, one under the rear seat and one at the base of the windshield.

Prevention of engine intrusion into passenger compartment.

Also, a forked load bearing front end structure was developed to divert impact forces and again also help prevent intrusion into passenger compartment.

Also, during an offset-frontal impact (which most are) a substructure of reinforced steel panels serves to deform the body progressively and redistribute the kinetic energy. Through this structure, the incoming loads are shared by both sides of the body unit rather than concentrated to one side.

In addition the usual crumple zones front and rear etc etc etc

The later W202 has all of the above plus what Mercedes call ISIS (integrated side impact system) which includes tubular door beams. Even so the early W202 without seat airbags only scored 2 stars in the Euro NCAP. The W210 with the full bag of tricks an excellent 4 star rating. The later the design the safer the car. Remember tests today are more onerous than in the W124's day.The W124 would probably still score OK in the front offset crash test on the drivers passenger cell.

Hard to gauge what sensible money is....

My father-in-law just bought an N-reg E280 estate, silver, 7 seats, black cloth, a/c, cruise, 128K miles, fsh, two owners from new, for £3200. Private sale, brokered by my local merc specialist. He's thrilled to bits with it. But for some, that's too dear.
