W124 Estate Trunk / rear interior lights staying on - help please!

I've no idea why but the rear lights which are meant to come on when the boot or rear doors are opened have decided to remain on no matter what I do with the switch or the doors.

Now FYI, my boot lock motor no longer works, if that helps.

At the moment, I have to open the bonnet, lock the car, remove the C fuse which kills the rear lights and the locking. no perfect!

All advice will be very gratefully received. I'd much rather fix it myself then pay someone else...

BTW - There was a bit of moisture but not any more.

I've stripped it down and sprayed switch cleaner on everything. No change.

Disconnected every multiplug I could find in the tailgate and still no change!

Is the switch on the boot lid working?

Is the switch on the boot lock workiing?

The dashboard switch does nothing to help.

I disconnected all relays and connectors and switches in the tailgate including the 2 microswitches in the lock mechanism and nothing changed - the lights all remained firmly on!

i expect you have broken wires in the left hinge area, in the rubber tube.

Hello all, wonder if anyone had a resolution to this problem?
I have the exact opposite whereby the boot lights will not turn on when the tailgate is lifted but will operate when the rear doors or interior lights are selected manually.
