I was taking a look around the front of the car and noticed the insulation behind the engine (presumably intended to aid soundproofing?) is disintegrating.

Initially I wondered whether I should look to replace it, then realised there's a significant gap on one side... throwing my assumption of soundproofing purpose out of line...

Wondering whether other 124 owners could comment on how theirs is looking and whether replacement is a difficult job?

Thanks,
Jeremy

It's pretty tatty on mine but still in one piece. I've never completely removed it but have partly when replacing the blower motor and fixing the comedy wiring loom... bit fiddly maybe but not difficult and replacing it should be the same

You're missing at least one of it's fasteners, 1st pic the star shaped wheel towards the right of the pic is a thumbscrew that secures it to bits of the heaters airbox. Should be another one where the hole is to the left
Next pic down, the black disc just below your hand is another of it's fasteners and should be mirrored on the other side. From memory it clips over/into sheetmetal bits along its bottom edge and the MAF cable runs in a small channel between this and the heater airbox

The internet suggests the part # is a1248200812 and it's ~ £35 list from MB. I can't decide from the pics whether the gap is because it's been broken or if it's just been thrown back in by a blind monkey instead of fitted properly

I think (it's been a while since i've had mine apart) the bit i've circled in red is a boss that the missing fastener is supposed to screw into
