Here's a link for a DIY diagnosis and replacement of a wiring loom with defective insulation. THE FIRST COUPLE OF PICTURES ILLUSTRATE WHAT TO LOOK FOR. You may have to carefully dissect a few sections of the black outer wiring sheath to check the insulation of the wires inside- you can always tape them up afterwards if things are OK. http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/M104WireHarness

Progress report: MB dealer carried out diagnosis which indicated fault with wiring loom and the AMM but I was, um, reluctant to pay dealer's labour and parts charges: hence booked with local Indie. Car goes in for work on 30th November, will let you know how we get on!

Update report: wiring loom and MAF replaced on 30 November, seems to have cured the problem - been driving it without any 'stalling' or 'hunting' whilst idling. Many thanks, if I may, to The Phirm for doing the work (and they specialise in VWs!!).

Hi Tim

I have exactly the same problem, how much does it cost you to get the wiring loam replaced?

Thanks

The 220 loom is easy to fix as its only a 4 cylinder, £400 roughly buys a new loom but a day with a soldering iron will fix it.
