hi all,

my mums W124 from 1988, has had problems before with starting, specifically the key would go in but just turn 'round and round' and not start the car, i cannot verify this because the car is in Ireland and i'm here, however that's what she tells me

a year ago she took it to some indie who tool the barrel out and 'cleaned it' or something, and the key worked again...

now its broken again, she doesnt want to buy a new barrel and the indies are not really interested in helping, do any of you have some good advice for this problem ? and do any of you live near sligo ?

cheers
niall

I think it must be a new barrel, how you get it to key 1 with the steering lock off I do not know

The barrel is ordered for the car so that you keep the same keys, it cost around £60.

The problemis that it can omnly ber removed with the steering lock off,,that is with the key turned to 2

I am wondering it it is the barrel holder that has broken

this car is a W124 though, so shouldn't it be different ? i'll try and ask my mother to explain exactly what happens with the key when she turns it,

as the car is in ireland would i have to order the new part in ireland or can i do it in sweden ?

The 123 is basically the same as a 124 I will send you the removal instruction,,I am still not clear on what is going round.

It would have to be bought in Ireland and the VIN number is needed.

ok, she got the car home with help from some indie... i've found out that her key is now modified by the same guy who 'fixed' the barrel before... a year ago, so the key is not the original key, will that mean i'll have to order a NEW key and NEW barrel ?

please let me know (any idea of total cost ?)

ok my initial description was wrong, the key was getting STUCK in the ignition and not starting the car

it is now still STUCK but can turn so she can start the car, but cannot remove the key

so, she was told before that she'd need a new key, new barrel and new lock,

is that correct ?

Thank you,,this is the way it goes. As before if she has the existing key that fits the doors,,then a new barrel can be bought to match that key, circa £50-60 this must only be done with the key turned to 1 as in the last instruction that I sent for the 124 lock

this key was modified though, so its not in original shape, long story....

my mum claims that as the key is in the lock and the 'lock' is not working, she needs a new lock, is the barrel the bit that surrounds the lock, is she right >?

If the key still unlocks the doors,,then the new barrel for that car will fix it.

If she still has a key that unlocks the door, that would do,,if you are unsure then get a new key and barrel,,thats the bit that the key goes into

When you go to buy new key or barrel you will need driving licence and v5, mercedes will not give you these parts without. Hope this helps

V5 is a piece of paper with the registered owner's and car details held by UK DVLC. Don't know about Ireland, but I guess they have something similar.

Regarding ID for dealer, she would need…
Vehicle log book as car is 1988 or she might have a vehicle registration document (Irish version of a V5)if she doesn’t have a log book…

Drivers licence and some proof of address…phone bill or bank statement.
Isn’t there is a special tool needed for extracting the lock?

I live up that way alright but am living out of a suite case at the moment so don’t know when I would be in that area.

Dec
EDIT... also VIN number
