Good Day All.

Really as the title says.

How do I lock the engine so that I can undo the bolt old the crank pully?

Thanks for your time.

Best Regards.

I think that you just jam a large screw driver in the flywheel starter ring

Ummmmmmmm, not to sure about doing that.

If that is the only way of doing it, is it a two persion job, as it's only me working on the car.

only way ive ever done it is with an air gun or by putting the car in gear with the handbrake on well (manual car obviously).

ive seen people put a socket on the nut with a long bar, wedge the bar against the ground and give a very quick flick on the starter just to move the nut slightly so it can be undone by hand. not recommended though. dangerous and unless your using 3/4 or 1 inch drive socket sets, likely to snap your big bar if its that tight!

Locking a socket and bar and cranking the engine works extremely well, and I've never had a problem with using this method.

I've dealt with one or two engines where the starter motor torque wasn't enough to remove the bolt, and then, you need to get a big impact gun in there, or, use a good locking tool - when you're dealing with really high torques, you ideally want to lock the crank pulley directly rather than the flywheel.

However, this cranking method is of no use at all when you come to want to tighten the bolt up again when you've finished.

What's the reason for wanting the bolt out? replacing the oil seal, or, something more interesting?

Whatever the reason, getting this joint re-assembled correctly is important, as the crank pulley will rattle about and damage the crank nose if there's any defficiency.

Hi when you replace the Bolt it has to be torqued down in two stages, stage1 200Nm=148lbf ft stage 2 Angle-tighten through a further 90 this is for bolt with conical washer. Bolt with spring washers 320Nm=236 lbf ft. Hope this helps

You will need a special tool to do this job safely so as the engine does not turn over, also a puller. Hope this helps

Thanks for eveyones replys so far.

I am based down on the Isle Of Wight.

I am not over keen of trying to lock the flywheel and undo the crank pully as this can put un-needed stress on the crank.

I have tried my air impact gun but thats a no good, I need a high torque impact gun.

The car is an auto, so I can't use the in gear trick, done that my self on other cars.

I have got a 2 and 3 arm puller, so should be ok, once I get the bolt out.

What is this special tool, has anyone got a picture of one?

Thanks for your time.

the Merc tool does in fact lock the flywheel.

there is a rubber bung under the flywheel area which is removed to get the tool locked into.

It has (I think) 3 teeth to lock the flywheel and two special long bolts to bolt it into position.

Merc were still selling them end last year, but pricey at around £80.

You could always well it on or hire it out.

Ok thanks.

I will have good look at the car again today and see if I can get the pully off.

Best Regards.

None at the monent, but there's an OM642 in the Jeep Grand Cherokee!
Is your pulley a one-piece type, or separately bolted to a vibration damper?

If bolted, I've seen a tool used which looks like a beefed-up immersion heater spanner (flat type). The ring end is then bolted to the pulley and the 'arm' end is allowed to work against the floor whilst removing or tightening the centre bolt.

If a one-piece type, then the toothed starter ring gear locking device mentioned would be ideal - together with a heavy-duty air gun.

I got the pully off in the end.

I ended up making my own crank pully holding / locking tool.

Thanks for eveyones help and advice.

before cranking make sure its the correct thread as some cars are opposite and then the bolt shears off in the crank! think merc's are ok though but do check!
