My car is off the road again. :( The symptoms are gearbox slipping in first and second, accompanied by a very slight graunching (is that a word?) noise. When stationary and shifting through the gears the same noise can be heard when selecting 2. I've checked the oil but haven't had time for anything else. Am I being optimistic for hoping it could be vacuum related?

I doubt it. Are you sure the fluid level is ok?

I think whoever re-built the box needs to be contacted.

Thanks guys, just what I feared. The oil level was fine when I checked it and the oil itself was a lovely red colour with no burned smell. Unfortunately it's a bit late to go back to the gearbox people, the rebuild was more than a year ago and some 20k miles.
If it does turn out to need another rebuild I think it'll be the end of the road for this car which is a shame as I've just about sorted everything else out.

A local (ish) gearbox specialist. I'll be contacting them today but don't hold out too much hope.
I'm not sure which way to go next, get another W124 and gut mine for spares or move on to a W210 300TD. I'd like the turbo engine but I'm not convinced about the car.
