Just thought that some of you may be interested in seeing the new suspension / brakes that I have had fitted to my W124. :) It has made all the difference to the handling of the vehicle.

The rear of the car got the similar treatment.

The car has just completed phase 3 of its refurbishment.

The first phase dealt with bodywork and a lot of the mechanics underneath. The second phase was a new soft-top and an overhaul of the roof folding structure, with the final phase having the engine out and a complete suspension renewal plus detailing and powder coating before being reinstalled. The cab is like brand new, except for the inside to be done at a later date.

Thank you very nice job, still got to be cheaper than buying a new car, and the depreciation after 1 yr. Hope this helps

Very very nice to see this. :):)

Do you have some details of the top you could post, maybe some photos and a bit of a blurb about the covering and headlining replacement process.

I have done the suspension and steering, head, loom on mine, just ordering all the parts for a hood, liner, intermediate layer, brakes, front seat rebuild and recover, propshaft, driveshafts, exhaust, glass, seals and a lot of other little bits and pieces.

I got a hold of a Genuine parts supplier in the US that makes it all worthwhile, especially as I don't really want a new car, these are fine enough (and large enough) for me.

Love to see some piccies of the hood, I am wondering if I should be doing this myself..... :):)

And, to my mind, a better bet than buying a new car. I'd love to do all that to my 300CE.

In fact, I'd rather spend 10-15K on the 300CE than 20-30K on something more recent. Many will say that the car will never be worth that sort of investment but I think they're missing the point.

Yes, he definitely is a 124 nut and I say, "All the best to him!"

I am about to do this on my BMW 2002. The great thing about cats with subframes is that you can build the subframe off the car then fit it.

The problem is that a fully-loaded subframe is going to weigh a couple of hundred kilos..

Yeah, I am a W124 nut. I just love them and wish that I could afford a garage with one of each type of W124 in it.

Photos of the soft-top replacement to follow soon.

I get all my work done by a garage as I am not a spanners man. It costs a lot but not as much as a new Mercedes that's why I do jobs in phases. I have to save up the cash before each is commissioned.

To me, a car is a piece of machinery and if well looked after, it can be a beautiful piece of machinery. I refer to Jeremy Clarkson's glass topped coffee table supported by a V8 engine, absolutely great.

The soft-top of my cabriolet was looking a bit tatty and was black. I thought that a better colour would have been blue, to match the dark blue paintwork (904).

Before getting the work done, I was assured that only the outer cover needed replacing as the inner lining was in good condition with only a couple of broken clips needed to be replaced, the lining was sagging close to the rear window.

By way of a coincidence, the framework developed a fault just before the car was due to go in. The soft-top would not open or close although I could hear the motor running when trying to activate it.

NB
I have tried to load photos to this message but unable to do so. Maybe it is because I downloaded 5 photos previously. Also have tried putting them on the Art Gallery but still unable. ??????

You can only upload pictures of a certain size, the best way is a host site like photobucket where you just post the URL and up comes a full sized picture

Your soft top non function, have you tried resetting. You do need your battery to be in top condition. Hope this helps

Please keep trying with the hood pictures. Be very interested to see how the long webbing straps are replaced (and the part numbers for them) as well as the frame maintenance that was carried out i.e. where can you expect them to go first. I have never oiled mine; seems to work OK but you just know it could do with a lube from time to time at least - I've been a bit naughty but when the covers come off that is the time to get access to everything for a good old soaking with the Krytox.

At the end of the day all this is nothing more than routine maintenance and if carried out properly over a period of time will see these cars go - well - go as long as the maintenance keeps up.

God bless you for keeping it going, I've quite a few pictures of your car - one of the best already I suspect. Once the decision is made don't even bother dwelling whilst adding up the pennies - it's the only way. :)

I am sorry that I can't answer any questions of a technical nature as I use various companies that specialise in putting right the things that need attention. As previously said, "I am not a spanners man" I spend all my time earning money to give to others!

Perhaps this posting should be re-sited by the administrators?

The fault developed due to the mechanics mal-functioning and a part of the frame broke with a loud bang.

The frame was repaired with a new part fitted and was tested as "good".

I agree with you about the condition of the battery.
