All dashboard lighting is suddently gone on a '94 W124 and twiddling the dimmer switch has not resurrected them (which is standard procedure for my W123s).

I've searched the site and found http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/archive/index.php/t-720.html

Not the same issue though - all other lgihts on the car are working.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas before I pull out the instrument cluster?

You have a little red fuse on the rear of the cluster

...it was the potentiometer, or whatever the term is for the dimmer switch behind the knob used to dim/light the instruments.

The soldered joint broke away leaving no lighting whatsoever. Easy enough to fix - slide out the cluster, unscrew the switch to remove and and solder/replace, whatever your preference.
