I sold my 190 six years ago I have hankered after a W124 Estate ever since and now intend to take the plunge while there are still a few to be had.

Have read through the threads with advice on the W124 and found the wealth of advice very useful. What I did notice was some commentary about 12 months ago on pricing, where £1500-£2000 was suggested as a target price for a E280TE on a 95 plate. I haven't seen much that looks worth looking at in this price range, have prices hardened?

In the absence of any price guides, what would be a realistic range for say for either a 220 / 280 estate on the final N plate?

I realise that condition will dictate price more that plate as such and intend to look for a post facelift model, making allowance for the fact you shold expect to have to set something aside for repais on a 10 yr+ car. Any advice much appreciated

W124 estate values

There's a really wide range of prices for each model. I think condition, history, spec & age affect prices the most, then colour, mileage, how well the car is presented, etc, etc

It's really easy to buy a car with 2 or 3 tyres that will need replacing in 6 months time, that's due a service, where the aircon & aerial don't work, which has a rusty wing and lots of stone chips in the windscreen. To sort that lot out properly would cost £1500 (or more) so there's a 100% variation in your budget to begin with

If you're considering a 280, I'd say a good 1995 car would cost £3500 upwards from a trader. That would be a car with about 130k miles, in good condition with history, and aircon & leather if you're lucky. If it had a 5-speed auto, sportline suspension and/or a really high spec it'd cost more. 220s tend to be lower-specced than 280s so they fetch less

It's possible to buy cars from £1500 upwards and be lucky finding a good one but, if you're picky about condition and about spec, then budget more than that and buy very carefully. There are still some exceptionally nice cars out there - you just need to spend the time to locate them

Many Thanks Nick, the price range quoted in last years threads did seem optimistic to me. I note from reading the threads that you hold a wealth of knowledge on the W124 and mention making some allowance for an auto gearbox re-build. I am wondering what the potential cost might be and are there particular specialists that undertake this work?

I have also noted the odd P reg W124- does anyone know if these are just remnants of stock left over from the final model run or do I recall some mention of a large order destined for South Africa finding its way to being registered here.

Intend to enjoy locating a good car and will psot when I succeed, likely to have a few more questions before then no doubt

Thanks Again

P reg W124

I've seen a couple of P reg W124s and assume they're just being registered late - they'd be > August 1996 registered, I suppose. There aren't many around

There were a few ex-Far East cars that came in and there have been posts about them on the Forums. But I think you'd know them by their strange spec and from the details in the V5

I've always found that there are lots & lots of M reg cars about, quite a few L & N reg and just a handful of P plates. Most of the K plates you see are pre-facelift
