Thanks for that chaps (television and turnipsock ) it is obviously diyable with a bit of aggro I just need to make myself some of those hacksawed bolts that i have seen for reinstalling the rear shoe springs to make life a bit easier.
Obviously the flange / bearing removal is the non DIY bit and I'm wondering about
a) getting the dealer to seperate?
( might need to get the bearing from him also tho so 58 +vat eurocarparts will go to about £90 but theres no such thing as a free lunch so
b) stick with eurocarparts and get a machineshop or Indie? to seperate I'm in Birmingham so that maybe an option

You should know there are some differences between the estate (harder) and saloon/coupe
rear bearings, so do your research.

Estate rear wheel bearings can be an utter swine. I've done two - on my own cars - and they were both a nightmare

merc dealer have quoted £48 for the kit!!!!! (shurely Shum mishtake!!! ) and I'm waiting for a price for the bearing being pressed out & in . Got 2 quotes today 1 is £150 labour & Parts & VAT on Top, other was £120 plus parts & VAT but 2nd one said the Flange could well not be saved and that sometimes the Stub needs renewing or the new bearing goes after a few thousand . I still think I'll try and dismantle and if it gets too much I'll have to bolt it together again and go head in hands to the Indie with my wad

The flange was cut off mine with a gas axe. Needed a new flange, bearing, handbrake parts and a few other bits & bobs as everything got so hot

The bearing is just a bearing - no reason it should be expensive. But it can be one of the nastiest jobs on a W124

I managed to get the Wheel Carrier off yesterday, took about 4hrs going slowly with a few cups of Tea and much swearing at my phone camera when it wouldn't take piccies of the brake layout and the Bolts / Nuts (on which ends ???? )of the Control Arms The Wikki article on the link on this post was very helpful But I have to say i strugglerd with the lower control/ track arm which upon closer inspection in the haynes manual is a balljoint so once i identified that and found my balljoint remover it came apart ok Also I needed a Puller to get the Wheel carrier off the Driveshaft ( not as easy as it looks because where the puller grips is actually chamfered to make it slip off you would need a puller with a biggish claw to avoid this , however it came off relatively easily.

However The Indie (who has just done my Head gasket replacement at £500 plus VAT and 40 to skim) had said if i struggled with bearing removal he would extract it for me

so in it went and back came the call 3hrs later that he cant remove it without damaging the Flange ...........so here comes a new flange as well. he couldnt tell me how much that would be ???

Hi tjamesbo, I've only just spotted this thread.

I took my wheel carrier to the dealers, but I was buying the bearing from there. The pressed the flange off, but the bearing kit was £90.

I managed to get the drive shaft clear as my big puller fitted on quite well. I tightend it up and then hit the screwed part with a big hammer, but the carrier was still on the car then. The drive shaft came out quite easily.

Hi turnipsock your article and piccies and exploded drawings were very useful and your little tools for the handbrake assembly ie the string with a knot and the 6mm bolts with a slot cut in .
again thanks there is a lot of help out there on the web and the support here is brilliant.

Job now complete, my Indy charged me just over a hundred quid for the following;

Bearing Removal from wheel carrier
New Bearing
New Flange as flange was damaged during bearing removal
Insertion of new Bearing
VAT

Very reasonable I think as merc wanted nearly the same just for supplying the bearing.

The tools pictured in the |Turnipsock post ie the slotted bolt and string meant that handbrake reassembly took about 10 mins compared to nearly 45 mins odd without the tools

I am now ready to do the other one as and when it needs it without being afraid!!

I would also add that during dissembly of the suspension I took great care to clean all rust off the bolts with a file and ensured the sockets were a good fit before starting to undo them.

Also as long as you only disturb all the outboard Nuts on all the control arms etc the suspension geometry should be unaltered as all the pivot bolts are Inboard

Thanks to everyone for their posts
