Hi all,

My W124 saloon has 4x fixing points for a roof rack. Where would I be able to get a reasonably priced one - are there generic/after market ones or would it need to be a Mercedes W124 spec.

Also - I have never used a roof rack - what sort of things can they be used for if fitted properly. I want it for 4m wooden beams for a roof, roof panels, a ladder, there will be various things (over seperate journeys of course!!). My understanding is if it is properly fixed and doesn't exceed the length of the car it's legal but what sort of weight limit is there? is 75kg of beams an acceptable load?

Before anyone suggests other options delivery of beams/panels is 600€ (not a typo) and a rental van is not 4m long inside so not an option either.

i dont know the legal story ,but suspect yr pushing at at 75 kg i got mine in lidl for a class and ml and have no issues ,often carry 30/40 kg contact someone like thule would think they will know . for cost of delivery you v near get a decent trailer which you could keep or sell after. if you do ,put a ladder rack on it . i collect 4 mtre wood planks with my m/bike trailer, never been bothered by anyone doing that, high vis jacket roped to end of planks and often carry 10/12.

Thanks for the reply, I actually have an offer of a trailer for 700€ but it's not long enough for the length and then I'd also have to find a W124 tow bar which is probably more complicated than buying a roof rack for it!

I'll look around, the beams individually are 25kg and it's 13km round trip so I could just do 2 at a time if 75kgs is pushing the limit. I've no hurry for it anyway so will seek out a second hand rack. If it had a sunroof I'd just use that but no sunroof fitted!

I would be looking on ebay. Cant imagine there are many W124 on the roads now and I guess roof racks for them are even more rare

Yeah, that's why I'm wondering if roof racks are generic sizes? I have four generic looking fixing points that must be a certain distance apart but am not sure how roof racks work and if it's by size or car. I can't find much online for "w124 roof rack" and seems mainly roof bars for the estate...
