I read somewhere that a coolant pipe that runs through oil, or maybe it was an oil line that runs through coolant, is prone to rusting through on elderly
W124 models and should be changed as a preventative measure.

I can't remember the details though - does this ring any bells or am I imagining it?

Thanks

Auto transmission cooling pipes are connected to the radiator. I have just replaced all the tranny pipes on my 320e due to corrosion. You may have an oil cooler too so could be those.

With cars of this age, keeping the pipes clean and waxoiling does hold the rust at bay on the pipes,,the same for brake pipes,, it is a sub frame off to replace them

Thanks both - found the article! It was in the MB club Gazette August 2007.
It's a metal pipe carrying auto transmission fluid from the gearbox to the radiator for cooling, which is prone to rusting through.
Part no. is 124 270 42 96. I'll add it to my list of things to do in the Spring.

Its the pipe that goes down and along the radiator, and fixes to the flexi pipe, about £48.00 new, yes alot for what you get. Hope this helps
