W124 steering wheel sizes

If I'm reading correctly, the W124 came with a 400mm diameter steering wheel in normal spec and 390mm with sport chassic (or perhaps just as part of the Sportline package?). How on earth did they justify the cost of re-tooling for a mere 10mm??? Is the general design different perhaps? Thicker rim? Different spoke layout?

I'm keen to find a wood/leather wheel for mine, considering an aftermarket one (https://ebay.us/mUM2Uw), but I do notice it seems "chunkier" than my current wheel.

Any thoughts/comments/advice?
