My sunroof doesn't work. I can hear the motor working when I push the switch, but the roof does not open. How hard is this to fix at home? HOw expensive would it be to have a shop reapair it?

Correct - that's not what is supposed to happen

if it's anything other than the worm gear on the motor that has worn or sheared off then it's a nightmare and not recommended.

Does the manual release in the boot work? If so it's a fault with the motor or the gearing on it

If you remove the motor and rotate the cable inner section manually does the roof move? if yes, look again at the gearing on the motor

again, it depends on the fault. No need to go to a Mercedes specialist, it's a Webasto roof (I think) so any sunroof specialist can give you a quote.
