Hi All

Ever since I had my TE, the sunroof hasnt worked on tilt, but slide has been fine. Today however, i got many clicking and grinding noises from the motor area and just managed to get it shut. I had a look at the motor and there is definitely something loose behind it-also the cable doesnt seem to be retracting properly, but I need to get the motor out to investigate. Has anyone done this job before, or maybe has instructions for motor removal (Malcolm ?).
I can see the retaining nuts but just want to know how to deal with detatching the cables etc.
Many thanks!

When I have removed these I have taken the gear cover off and removed the fibre gear then slid off the cable. There may be of course a better way!

Thanks guys. It could be the gear, but there is definitely something floating around the back of the motor that should be attached-can't see properly until I can remove it though. Is the gear cover removed before or after unbolting the motor? (And just in case, is the gear available seperately?)

Unbolt the three main screws on the black metal housing.

Turn the motor housing round and you will see three 8mm bolts on the plate of the motor housing and the gear is underneath.

Oh dear.....:( checked it out today and the cable is broken-I only just managed to get it shut again. Has anyone ever changed a cable? I am suspecting that it will be very hard-would I be right?
Thanks.

And because of this, I now have a new unfitted VW Passat sunroof tinted wind deflector for sale......

Thanks to Malcolm, I can now see that changing the cable isnt as hard as it first seems-basically, it is removing the sunroof headlining, disconnecting the connection to the panel and pulling the old cable through and out. Then lubricate new cable and feed it back in.
However, I do think it might be beyond my capabilities. Questions:

1. Does anyone know how long the official time for changing one of these inner cables is at Mercedes?

2. Anyone got an idea how much it is likely to cost if I get an indy to do it(or indeed know an indy who WOULD tackle it!)

Thanks all. :)

A coach trimmer from the old school would be able to do it

I have an Indie in Sussex who will do these. The inner cable is about £50, the outer is about £50 and the worst-case scenario is that you need both

My worst-case scenario cost £399 inc VAT which was £100 less than I budgeted for

There is a relay in the boot somewhere, make sure the pins on this are making good contact before you start messing about. It takes about five minutes to check.

2) Merx in Stoke do all of my stuff. They seem quite customer friendly and he took an incredibly commited approach to the glow plugs on my now written off w124. It's not too far from Walsall.

Nothing wrong with the motor-I disconnected and reversed it to see the problem and the cable is indeed snapped in half!:(
