I have a 1992 W124 E300 24v

Hi, need some help selecting the right wheel bolts. Currently I was using 30mm (from the shoulder to the tip) but these are to small for the new rims. I tried 40mm they look good but only 20mm fit into the hub, is this enough or do I have to go longer?

Thanks

Vas

Do be very carefull especialy on the rear, it is easy for overlong wheel bolts to smash up the parking brake mechanism if the bolts protrude to far through the hub.
If the bolt end threads become damaged the rear hub flange may/will be destroyed when the bolts are removed, this makes it an expensive job.

To measure the required bolt length measure the thickness of your new wheels and add this length to the standard steel wheel bolts length - 3mm for the steels thickness, or measure the protrusion of a standard bolt through a standard wheel and find some that have this length of protrusion through your wheels.

Rotate each rear wheel at least one full turn whilst its still off the ground to make sure that its bolts are not catching on the brake spings etc.

You could measure the absolute maximum pentration length by installing one bolt into the rear hub and increasing its penetration untill it catches whilst being hand driven, try both sides just in case they differ slightly. Use bolts that have at least 3mm or so less protrusion than the measured maximum.

Thanks, so if all is ok is 20mm of protrussion on all 5 bolts enough to hold the wheel. The reason I ask when I bought the car it already had after market wheels fitted.

Regards
