Hey PJ,

Had the same problem with my E260 - the MB garage kept insisting that there was nothing wrong with the tracking but it was wearing the o/s of the tyres. Took it to a computerised place and they fixed the problem. Confronted MB about it and they didn't have an answer. In any event, let's face it MB aren't that special that it's specialist job! what about a local indepenedent MB specialist may charge more than a local computerised place but at least you know they know the car.

don't bother with the kwickfits but I've normally found that these after market places with the latest tracking kit can normally do it. I've been turned away from a couple but it hasn't been that hard to find one. Just get the yellow pages out and ring round.

To adjust either front camber or caster on a 210 E class, you will need special "offset" bolts from MB only. If you havn't got these, the job cannot be done properly.

This is correct as Turnipsock found out on his 124,its impossible without the special tools.

You dont need special tools to do four wheel alignment on mercedes, but you do need a four wheel alignment computer that is capable of giving the correct readings for that model. They are all fitted with the adjusters, you simply need to know how to use them in conjunction with the wheel alignment equipment.

Eric please stop making these silly postings, you do need jigs for this job, the post you made about the SAMs under the front seats wastes an awful lot of time for other people. You claim to repair 50k Mercedes cars a week yet you have only had WIS since Jan07, and you claim to have STAR but you have never made reffernce to it in one of your postings. This last link shows when you bought WIS.

Type 49 is a genuine MB engineer and is the best man to be believed on this forum, he is much better than me for actual faults.

If the car is a W124 it's common to find the track rod ends are frozen on the track rods and, as a result, adjustments tend to be ignored. If that's the case, remove the whole track rod and remove the ends on the bench - it's a lot easier

If you find a place with an optical / laser alignment system they should be able to get it setup properly so long as they select the correct car from the menu. If a car has sports suspension, for example, the settings would be different to the regular car

Even if the settings are correct it's possible for a W124 to pull (normally to the left) if the tyres are worn conically. In that case you'll need 2 or 4 new tyres before it'll run true

I think economising on tracking is a mistake as a pair of tyres will cost far more than £135

No special tools or bolts required for alignment on W124 vehicles.

They already have the wishbone eccentric bolts and washers installed as standard on the front suspension.

The rear wheels toe is adjustable and also has the bolt installed.

FRONT SUSPENSION as follows:

The front wishbone bolt adjusts the CAMBER and the rear wishbone bolt adjusts the CASTOR.

I eventually got mine done at an independent garage. I had trouble finding a place to do it though. While talking to the people at that garage they said they did all the local bodyshops wheel alignment.

You could ask a bodyshop where they get their repaired cars wheels aligned.

OOOOOOps!!! I've just read the first post again & seen the car is a 124. You do NOT need any offset bolts. 124s are fully adjustable. However, 210, 202, 208, 209, 203 all need offset bolts to adjust camber or caster on the front.

MBs test their wheel alignment different to everyone else (they would do!). The alignment tools or "heads" are measuring the hubs & not the wheels. The "heads" have 5 pins which go through the wheel & onto the hubs, this is why all MB wheels have 5 small holes in between the wheel bolt holes. Just thought I'd let some people know why they may be told it's "dealer only".

I'm near Chester and would like to know somewhere (competent) too! The only place that I've seen recommended elsewhere is in Oldham:
http://www.drurylaneservices.com/geometry.htm - if anyone knows them then some feedback would be welcome.

I gather that weighting the car is quite important on MB's, but I've heard of very few places that do that.

Thank you Rory

The special tool for doing any camber work is part number 201 589 02 21 00

The other special tool mentioned By type 49 is the clamp that goes over the face of the wheel 124 589 01 31 00

This is for the 124 cars. malcolm
