engine refuses to start, will fire up on the first few turnes of the starter also the abs light will flicker once when cranking.fuel presure good and plenty of strong spark at coil.tried bypassing the ovp relay but still the same.the car has been playing up for a while by unsable idle and surging at cruising speed under slight load.

Really does sound like a duff OVP relay.....surging, bad idle and ABS light coming on are classic OVP problems.

Because the OVP breaks down randomly it can cause all sorts of problems which are hard to detect.

If yours is still the original, I would change it for the sake of £45 or so. Dead easy to replace.

The originals had "Made in Austria" on them.

Good luck.

I'd like to know where the OVP relay is. I've got similar problems on my E220 [1994] I posted the problem a while back as 124 rough starting but got no replies. This might be the answer to my problem as well.

It's under a black plastic cover nearest the wing at the end of the ECU

Hope this helps

Found the OVP relay at lunch time where everyone said it was but hidden under a black plastic cover as Ade says. Fuse not blown though.
