My recently acquired '94 E300 diesel estate has a seemingly original genuine MB wooden/leather steering wheel to go with the walnut interior but the gear knob is leather not wood so I thought I would change it to match.
An extensive trawl of the internet has only produced aftermarket knobs one of which is made in Bulgaria, doesn't have a chromed shaft and has a rather cheap looking MB logo printed on it.
Did MB in fact make their own walnut gear knobs for the W124? Or were they always aftermarket items?

Not sure if MB made any gearknobs specifically to your model. But they certainly did it for other models. I would think it would fit as it is only a screw fixing and most likely "one size fits all".

My fathers first MB, an 560SEC had a leather (plastics!) one and we bought one to match the wood. Looked great.

Perhaps MB still do them?!

Thanks. Of course you're right about the SEC. Mine had one now I think about it. And i'm sure they'll fit (though apparently the manual and auto boxes are different).

I'll ask MB parts, though if they do still do them, they'll probably cost two arms and a similar number of legs.

Incidentally if you know anyone who wanrts a perfect blue/black low mileage original 500SEC with the all the timmings I know of one - 85K from new with FSH.

You didn't mention a price.

Those wooden gearknobs off t'internet, what a joke, i tried one, and the picture looked remarkably unlike the knob that turned up, which i believe was mdf and which was returned pdq.

It was awful. Covering the existing leather knob in self adhesive imitation plastic formica would have been better.

I bought one off Ebay ( there are a few around) and yes, it isnt a perfect match, but I prefer it to my orginal leather one. Of course its a matter of how fussy you are, and if a better match comes along then Ill buy it, but for now I like it well enough.

Yes yours is the one I bought crammy. Can't say I do like it as much as you, tis the little glued on motif that i think sucks. Which led me to wonder whether MB actually made one for the 124.

The one on the picture does not look anywhere like the "real deal" directly from MB.

The wooden knob we bought did not have an MB emblem at the top. All pure wood (well, probably made of plastic like the rest of the wood interior).
