Hi All
The rear side windows on my TE are leaking slightly, as I think most do! Looking to cure it.....
How do I remove the painted surrounds on the outside of the car to get to the rubbers? Am I likely to destroy them in the process?

Open the back doors, remove the crosshead screws in the door opening (the trim folds into the opening) and very carefully pull the trim out of the rubber seal

You'll find that when you have the side part of the trim out of the rubber seal and you start to pull out the top part the trim will twist and bend. Do not let it do this. Use the minimum force and be very patient

Once you have the trim out you'll find that you haven't got very far. If you decide to remove the seal & glass, good luck - you're into a bigger job than you planned

I would approach it from the other direction - I'd use some glass sealer on the inside & outside of the seal, having cleaned it first, and proceed to removing the glass only when the sealer has been proved to have failed

So If I get you right Nick, remove the trim and then use sealant in and out of the seal? (To be honest, that is what I was planning to do-I don't fancy glass removal......
Oh, and how is the trim held on-clips, or just retained by the seal?
Thanks.

Details sent to you.

When sealing the glass, use one of the black sealers, the clear ones are useless, it needs to be a flexible sealer, any surplus wipes off with spirit.

The rubber must be dry in the seal, and a hair drier -warm air gun is good for this

So is it possible to reseal without removing the trim then? The gap looks a bit tight.....

Silicon is the best lubricant that you can get for rubber, could you insert one of the old fashioned table knives, the bone handled ones in between the glass and the rubber and use a silicon aerosol to inject this grease into the gap, its water proof and would make a good seal

The problem is usually in the corners, only the bottom ones

I am new to this forum [first post here!] but I just went through the same thing on my wagon [Estate, Kombi, etc.]...I first attempted the sealing method using black sealant inside and outside. It did absolutely nothing. Finally broke down and bought a right side new rubber seal and had a glass guy put it in. as 'television' pointed out, the leak was in the bottom rear corner of the rubber; at only 80k miles on the car and in a cool climate its whole life, I was a bit unhappy about that...new seal cured the leak completely; no more damp carpet in the right rear of the car and no more condensation on the inside of the glass.
