I recently bought a 1988 300SE with low mileage (70,000 km). Car was an ex Japanese market model and used in a diplomatic mission where usage was small.
The gearbox works beautifully when the car/gearbox is cold, and all the way up to normal operating temp. At normal operating temp the changes get "clunkier" as if they are taking longer to execute, and the 3rd to 2nd downshift get's lost. Sometimes it can take 10 to 15 secs! Obviously this is quite character building when sat across a busy traffic lane. However, if I manually select 2nd going into the corner, it changes down straight away. But if I dont and the shift gets lost, manual selection does nothing either.
Fluid and filter change has not improved the situation.
Any ideas please, vacuum? output governor? what is temperature related to do this?
Many thanks in advance
