W129 Sl500 Backrest

The backrest release handle on my SL500 has stopped functioning.
I am guessing that it is cable operated. How do I get into it to see what has broken? Do I have to remove the seat from the car? there is no obvious way to get at the seat internals

The should be 2 screws at the bottom on the seat back and you remove them and the backrest comes off,,if you get stuck I can print it off for you

Raise the seat squab via your elec seat you will find 2 screws either side of the seat left & right hand side unscrew then just pull forward the bottom squab comes out, at the back of the seat if the seat is in the Locked position (not forward ) it might be difficult to find there is two tork screws on the bottom edge if you run your finger along the edge you will feel them remove them then pull down then it pulls out, then you can see all the inner workings of Seat there is a video clip poss on the forum (if the seat in the open position it only takes a few mins )hope you can understand this
