I would be good if one of the qualified Merc mechanics on the forum could specify the exact procedure for dipping the ATF on the auto box, and perhaps could it be made as a sticky ?

In WIS it says get the car up to 80c move the selector from P to D a few times, the return lever to P and check the level.

I could write it up and add it to the gearbox fluid quantity sticky

TV, that would be a good idea, as dipping in drive could be fatal, health and safety and all that, very dangerous.

Surely the moderators will agree ?

There will be no problem in putting it up:D it will be safety related

I know the chances are slim, but imagine dipping in drive and for some reason, the H/brake failed and you get trapped between the car and the garage wall !!

Unlikely to happen, but it could !
Yes it could.

The workshop info always says "foot on brake"

No good if you are doing the ATF dip on your own, or trust the wife to keep her foot on the brake ............Make a sticky.

No, the check is done in P

i never understood why ford said that either. i tried checking the level in D, then repeated their procedure (at the time) and checked in N and P and it made no difference at all to the level on the dipstick!

Here's an easy one to start with.....

If i want to check and top up autobox fluid do i just select each gear twice then with engine still running check the dipstick level like the old fords or do Merc have a different sequence of events??

All the very best,

Just take for a drive and warm it up,leave it in D and check with the parking brake on.

You may not have a dip stick
