Thinking of buying a 1998 S320. The gear shift shows the numbers 2,3 and 4 which would indicate a 5 speed box which the seller says it is. However, it comes up as a four speed on data check websites and the 'Russian VIN check' does not mention a 5 speed box, which it does for my existing 5 speed W124 E320.

Can anyone with a W140 please confirm that a 5 speed box is marked 2,3 and 4, or conversely that a W140 with a known 4 speed box only shows 2 and 3?

Many thanks

The boxes changed during 1996,, and after this time only the 722.6 box was used and the gate shows 234 the same that was on my 1999 129 that shared so many parts of the 140

Gentlemen,

Many thanks for your help - my mind in now at rest!

I have noticed that the transmission, as reported by our Soviet friends, is 722605. I just did not know the significance of this before your informative replies.

Regards

We only deal with the box as a 722.6 the other numbers are for different cars and engine outputs,, the working principle is the same on all of the with the exception of the method of changing gear
