I went to open the wife's ML with the spare key a few days ago, and the key was as dead as a dodo. I have replaced the batteries, but it still won't open / close the doors. It will however still start the car.

Is there a special sequence of things to do after replacing the batteries, or is it a back to MB and reprogram it job ??

Hi Mark,, the keys cannot be re programmed its possible that there is a poor connection on the PCB

Hold the key infront of a digital camera and see if you can see the beam

Many thanks Malcolm,

I tried that last night, and whilst this does work on the key for the CLK, my ML key doesn't have a little window with the IR transmitter behind it. I tried both keys (1 good / 1 not) and the jag keys, and none of them gave me an IR light under the camera. The CLk keys both worked well.

Do I need to remove the PCB from the remote to do this, if so how do I get the PCB out of the fob ?

I suspect the key is duff.

If you take your car to someone with a Star they can check it.

The key is now working. I needed to re-sync the remote.

Put it into ignition, Turn to pos2, remove key, Hold Lock button down and press unlock 5 times.

Thats very good info, have to make a note of it. Ive never had to replace the batteries in either of my keys so it will probably be very useful info shortly.

The ML keys are wireless and you can use the Jeremy Clarkson trick of holding the key to your head and open/close the car from longer distances away, great to know if you 'forgot' to lock it :)
