The aircon on my W164 is behaving strangely, sometimes I have to drive for a significant number of miles before it will kick in.

Lots of forum reading later, it seems these variable displacement compressors can have issues with a sticking electronic control valve, and in fact my car is logging a fault code for short/excessive current to the compressor which is a smoking gun.

Has anyone replaced the control valve? I can see it’s a regular fix in the VW world, or am I best replacing the whole compressor?

If it’s a compressor change, other than a genuine Mercedes, what’s the opinion on Hella/Behr/Denso compressors as a direct replacement?

If you replace the compressor I bought a Hella for my 210 which was a bargain at £152 and it's still working a treat.

Try checking the wires going to the compressor you might find they have nearly snapped due to the constant vibration when the compressor kicks in.
