Think my battery is playing up. Still on factory battery: fitted 2008.
Question is: do I really have to go for an AGM battery or a standard 100ah Varta?

Also, the auxiliary battery will have to be changed which is fine: £70 from MB dealers.

Thanks in advance.

Yours has done well if still the original. My 2007 is on its third. The AGM ones seem to last no time at all.

I noticed Bosch, Varta, Exide and Duracell only guarantee their AGM batteries for 2 years, compared to up to 8 yrs for lead acid.
That should say something about the longevity of AGM batteries. A bit disappointing considering the extra cost of AGM.

I have replaced AGM batteries on both W164’s with lead acid. No issues since doing it about 18mths ago.

Should be fine Christian- if you want to compare Tayna
https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/enduroline/019/
I wouldn’t discount giving MB Grangemouth a call either though 01324 686002 ask for Steven and mention Mercedes Club for your discount, they do really good OEM battery deals (they are Varta too), £5 next day delivery (and I think you might get a free fleece blanket thrown in?). Have your VIN number handy

If you want a "wet" battery, that is a good price for a Varta delivered and beats Tayna for price.
But you need to check if your ML should be using an AGM and if so, get one.

I made the mistake of using the ECP checker which brought up a Bosch lead acid as being suitable. I bought it but realised afterwards it should have been an AGM one.

As John above, don't discount using MB Grangemouth for a really good price on the correct battery.

Yip, forgot to mention the wet battery bit- if AGM needed as already mentioned it will cost more!
We don’t have the year for the W164, and whether it has stop/start (probably not??)

A new rear battery should stop those messages and starting struggles.

Ok. SO this is my AGM battery, right? Under the drivers seat?

Both the main 95 Ah battery and the smaller aux battery are at the rear of the drivers seat and you need to slide the seat to the most forward position to gain access to both.
Here is a video showing how to get to the main battery. (Its a LHD but its under the drivers seat in the UK)

I can confirm that on our 2008 & 2009 W164’s I have replaced AGM with standard lead acid with no battery related issues in 18months. Neither car has start/stop (like the OP).
