The driver's side door lock stopped working in my ML some months ago. It does not work with either the central locking or auto lock on movement of the vehicle. It has to be manually locked and released. Now the rear door on the same side has the same problem! I have been quoted £1000 at the Mercedes main dealer so wanted to know if anyone had any advice on what it could be before I commit to spending that much! Any help much appreciated!

I have a similar problem with a W164. Has anyone come up with what the problem may be? I have been looking on lots of other sites and some are saying it is the lock actuator and others are saying it could be the door module (that also controls the windows, which are working ok). I am obviously looking at the cheapest (and easiest) option to try first. Anyone?

2006 ML 320 CDI W164
John390 - I have had exactly the same problem with both front door locks on my 2006 ML 320 CDI.

I've just replaced both front door lock actuators using replacement parts available from Carrat-Auto on eBay.

Here's the links to the parts listed:

However, my car has Keyless Go and the locks for these are slightly different in that they have 7 electrical pin connectors not three. Carrat-Auto sell these for £54 but you'll need to contact them to check availability. You'll also need to send your old locks back for repair or you'll be charged an additional £30.

I'm pretty sure its the motors that fail with the locks when the thing is no longer active and there is a video on YouTube showing how to cut into the plastic to make a repair. However, for the sake of £37 rather than £430 from MB, the locks supplied from Carrat-Auto have not been damaged in any way and carry a 1 year warranty.

If you're familiar with taking the door apart you'll know how difficult it can be to get the door lock actuator back in the door if the various clips and brackets that hold the various components of the entire door lock assembly together have broken off! If it's the first time the door has come apart then its worth taking your time to make sure you don't snap any of these clips during the removal process.

The following videos are worth watching to demonstrate the process involved:

If your locks are "machine gunning" then you need this spring repair:

..and parts available here:

If your locks are inactive then you need to change the door lock actuators as above. Replacement locks ordered from Carrat-Auto already have new springs fitted.
