so the other half was in town with her A150 today and 10 minutes before her destination, the EML came on, I got it towed home. The car starts/drives but sounds like a diesel... it has oil and otherwise should hopefully survive another few years yet (238000 kilometers on the clock).

I scanned the diagnostic codes and the following were stored.

P0016 - Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor A

P0325 - Knock sensor 1 Circuit Bank 1 or Single Sensor

do any of you have any ideas what this means for the car, is it toast ? do I have an expensive bill coming my way or is it hopefully something easily replaced/fixed

thanks in advance for your help/advice

found these by googling, are they accurate ?

P0325 Causes

This failure code can be caused by the sensor itself, the engine controller, or the wiring between the two, including the connectors.

What are common solutions to code P0016 ?

The most common solution to this code is the replacement/repair of wiring, followed by replacement of crankshaft/camshaft position sensors if the engine timing is known to be good. Less common solutions include replacement of reluctor rings, or VVT/VCT oil control solenoids. Note that PCM failures are rare.

Sounds like the timing chain has jumped a few teeth.
Time to replace the chain tensioner.

No it shouldn't.
Those codes do suggest the chain has jumped though.

ok so if it has jumped, is that a big problem (i.e. expensive) ?

Depends on what's touched internally.
If valves and pistons have had a coming together then yes potentially.

I would definitely be asking whoever did the tensioner to have a look.

Should be able to check cam timing without head coming off. Just take cam covers off to check.

Whatever you do don't start the engine. You could easily make things worse if it's just tensioner failed causing the timing chain to rattle.

well she drove with the light on for 10 minutes or more... and it has been started 3 times since then, to drive onto the recovery vehicle, and off again

If you're lucky the chain will be hitting the casing but with it so loose it could jump teeth.
