Bit of an odd one,
my trusty A class, if left for more that 5 days, i.e. in the airport car park while on holiday, has 'death rattle' on initial start up, its only happens if left for 5 days or more, other than that the engine runs really well doesn’t use oil and good on fuel

It has regular oil changes every 5 k miles, using MB supplied oil and filter, the filter drain O rings changed every time. It sounds as if the filter has emptied itself, anyone else experienced this ?
My old W168 didn’t do it. I believe there is a one way valve in the filter housing, I'm thinking this might have a small leak ? can the housing be changed with the engine in situ

Many thanks

Why not change the oil filter in case it's defective?
Edit. I was thinking it was a canister type but if its a removable element type then you'd need to check any anti drain valve in the filter housing.

You might need to look in to if the oil thats in the engine is good for the miles on your clock , if it is a high mile engine, then you might need better viscosity oil .[thicker]

Not familiar with these but don't they have a timing chain!

The tensioner may be faulty. Cold start up rattle is the Modus Operandi of failing chain tensioners.
Something in the back of my head says something about a seal in the tensioner getting hard and leaking the oil from the tensioner. I could be wrong but...

Hydraulic tappets will also lose oil pressure over time but I would imagine that they would be rattley in normal driving also.

Just a thought.

Yr spot on. O ring in tensioner drys up and over 4,5 days oil runs out. Initial start up fills it again.
If not sorted ASAP u will likely be walking soon . If chain breaks lots of straight bits likely no longer straight!!! Get a chain and tensioner in it. Its a bit of a fiddle as not much room but entirely DIY possible think there are a nu of utube video and Haynes do a half decent manual. Also info on" lofty, s home page"
