W169 A180 CDI soot or carbon on air filters

Hi Guys , I have a exhaust type smell now and then in the cab out side of the car . I know the egr valve could do with cleaning or poss replacement, the area of soot is in the egr valve area . That said that is where the holes on the bottom of the air filter housings are . Could this be the egr or a leaking injector ? Just shining a touch through and around I can see any build up of carbon and no obvious smell. This has been happening for a long while. I several services I have asked for inspection and have been told it's fine , however the smell is sometimes stil present. I have started to look myself for the issue . Its 2006 with 85000 miles on the clock .

Leaking injector seal , blowing? Shud be easy enough to spot /hear. Leakin manifold gasket, again shud hear it. Is egr on that vac operated?

If you can see a thin vacuum pipe going to the EGR (rather than an electrical connector) then it is vac operated.
