Hi there,

My C220 Diesel has a whiney differential. Anyone know where the fill / drain plugs are and which / how much oil I should use to refill it.

Thanks

The filler standpipe is half way up on the section that points towards the propshaft. make a small stick to test as oil level is the top of the stand pipe

It is more than likely the pinion bearing that has gone if it whines when you are pulling and quiet on the over run

Capacity is 1.1L, expect to use about 0.9L when draining and refilling. As Television said filler/level check plug is on the "nose", on the passenger side. Drain plug is on the other side at the bottom, more obvious. You'll need 14mm hex for both plugs.

Remember to release the filler before draining the oil - it might be seized and you want to make sure you get this out before draining. Mine came out OK after a wipe clean and a spray with WD-40.

See here for a diagram showing the filler plug.

This is an interesting observation. I have to replace the Poly V Tensioner on my W124 and am told that the diff is noisy. Certainly it is noisy inside the Estate, but.. this answer has got me thinking.

Now, in replacing the Tensioner which I am happy to do, is it wise to buy a new Tension Spring and a new Damper strut? The Tensioner seems to rely on both these and I ask myself how does the Tensioner actually fail as its like a fulcrum pivot? There are a few ominous filings seen around the area and I have no idea where they come from but could this be something else wearing? (When I had a 1934 Riley it had a Fan with a chain belt linkage system. I recall the belt eventually cutting right through the pulley and the Fan blade shearing off. Happy days!)

Are filings commonly seen? Its noisy but if by replacing it I DON'T have to replace the Diff then this will be the only good news I've had today.
