Firstly check the gearbox oil level, and eliminate that as a problem.

I had a recent problem with my E300 Auto, and mine refused to change gear all of a sudden. I took my to an independant MB specialist, and they diagnosed that it was the conductor plate, and changed it, they also did a full "A" service and changed the gearbox oil/filters. Total cost including service around £460.

There are a lot of more experienced people on here than me, that might be able to assist with other ideas?

Yes the conductor plate could be a very good reason and I note the way in which it failed. It is a fault code readable fault.
Do not go to a MB dealer as they are far too expensive, if you need help in finding a good man for the job, just give your location.

Thank you Malcolm as i said not to clever on these wonderful machines(computers and MB) however latest update, used inde in brigg very helpful man and put car on magic machine there and then. Result just about every fault code you could think off:confused: then worked his way through clearing them, checked atf level ok, quick road test, recheck diagnostic and faults still clear:) Conclusion, he thinks system so over loaded with long term minor faults one triggers another & so on, also i did not realize ECU will not let you race g/box from cold & temp sensors fully warmed, and on both times i had problem i was trying to get into reasonably fast traffic without hindering anyone(too considerate);) from cold, and that may have been what happened & why stopping & restarting was ok. Probably havent explained this very well but it made sense to me when he very patiently explained and i am running it for a few days to see how she goes , then have booked in for fluid&filters change next week to be on safe side. Hope this makes to all you technical people out there, fingers crossed have just got back from 180 miles round trip collecting friends from E/Mid Airport no problems, like a dream:grin:

Independant BM Specialist Brigg N/Lincs

Can only speak from one visit but found John of -Mcleods Of Brigg Ltd (01652 658216) most helpful especially as i just turned up with no prior arrangement, gave me 2 hours of his time and so far cured my problem(not completely stupid-realize time will tell but so far:) ) then when how much? he said settle up when you come back for fluid/filters change & in meantime see if problem happens again. Seems pretty fair to me especially as i said he doesnt know me from Adam:grin: Will update after 2nd visit for change(26th) Bill
