Thanks malcolm, this sounds daft but is there a diy way of checking the oil level, ie a substitute dipstick, also noticed that the speedo is not working.

Take a 1.25 m length of curtain wire, push it down to the bottom, and with the engine hot at 80 c it should be 5.6 cm up the wire.

Is the mileometer working

Could also be the pilot bush/poor electrical connection or even a low battery voltage can cause issues.

Thanks again malcolm, my nearest indie is 20 miles away, i don't think driving that far in first gear will do me or the car any good. One thing, how is the speedo driven, is it from the wheel sensors??.

Yes I forgot that bit,, this could be stopping the box from changing if speed signal missing,,I hope that someone else can come up with some info on this,,did both faults happen at the same time

Well, this my second c180, my other is an eatate which my wife uses. This particular one iI have only had a few days, having bought it from a car auction, 76k with a fully documented service history. I have just checked the MOT history on the VOSA site, and it failed it's last MOT because the abs light was on. After reading this I went out and turned the ignition on and the ABS ligtht did not come on, I then removed the cluster to find someone has tried to wire the abs bulb to something else to make the light go off in order to get through the MOT. I removed this wireing bodge job and now the light is on all the time. This pointing to an ABS problem, which is why i asked how the speedo is driven.
Sorry this has been so long winded.

Then this could all be tied to the box fault, now you will have an OVP relay on this car and it needs to be checked.

I wilö se what I have on this

Why not put your Email address in your signature and click save changes at the bottom

These faults are all linked and nothing wrong with the gearbox

Your brake lamp switch that sits just over the brake pedal could be faulty giving the faults that you have.

I have sent 1 paper on this
