Mind me asking why you think it has gone
Sorry for the delay in replying, my pc decided it did not want to play anymore!!
The management light is on, i have replaced the maf and the light is still on. The car runs rough on first start up, which clears after about 30 seconds and is then fine for the rest of the day. Also on the first start ther is a small amount of smoke from the exhaust which is again fine after about 30 seconds. I think that the o2 sensor is the next step. The car is a 2001 W202 c180 with the 1998cc engine.

Thanks for that Malcolm, am I correct in thinking that the one in front of the cat is more likely to fail out of the 2 and is it a diy job, eg can i do it if the car is up on ramps.

i really think that guessing at the O2 sensor is wasting money - at least have the codes read! the O2 sensor is not used during or immediately after cold start, so is not going to make a difference to this particular problem, sorry.

As above, the o2 sensor doesn't come into play until the engine has warmed up.

Help getting to Bank 1 Sensor 1

I will print off the instructions for the upper one later this evening,, please remind me so that I find the post again

Hi Television. I have a C280 W202 with a bad bank 1 sensor 1 oxygen sensor. I have tried to get to it from above and below, but no luck. Above, looks like I need to remove a bolt on the valve cover - hard to believe this is the proper method. From below, I have removed the 3 rubber hangers and the two bolt assembly holding the exhaust to the transmission. With all this unhooked, I have heard you will have access to the sensor, but again, no luck. Any advice?
