Hiya chaps,

Had my 2000 w202 c220cdi for a year now, 25000 miles with next to no probs at all. The niggles are starting to appear and im starting to worry.

The latest one is this. Car starts fine in the morning, but if I stop halfway down the road ,, maybe at the garage to fill up, the car does not start, only after nearly draining the battery does she breathe life. But if she is left overnight she starts first time.

Any ideas chaps ?? Beginning to think about getting rid, hope there is a easy fix for this one.

Crankshaft sensor would be the ideal candidate for this fault.

It will have left a fault code that can be read on a Star diagnostic tester.

There is little else that will cause this, had another one earlier this week

if i was to remove this, clean it up and put it back in, would it make a difference ??

or should i just order the bit, whats the part number to order ?

cheers malcolm

They are Hall effect switches and cant be cleaned, they open and close 1000s of times a minute.

You can have the code read out and MB will have the part number. though I am sure of the fault I would hate myself if I was wrong in the this.

They cost around £80

Hi Kerms, sorry to hear your feelings of MB. The problem here is temperature related, and I quote (had the cooling fan control unit done recently) If it starts when cold and not when warm then its definately temperature related. Could you explain what led up to this part being changed? Your explanation of this piece of history would help find the cause of your present problems. Thanks Eric

sure mate, a month ago my cooling fan came on whilst driving for no reason and stayed on, and only turned off when i turned off the ignition. This was accompanied by the coolant warning light intermittantly coming on and off. MB diagnosed the problem as the cooling fan ecu under the passenger side of the front bumper, and when i saw the old one i had to agree, it was minging !! All changed at MB for just short of £300. 1000 miles later and my little money muncher has developed a problem starting after being run , not after being left overnight, just after a short run. She starts after a while, just before the battery dies !!

Television reckons its the crank sensor, how about you mate ?

Yes this is possible, but so are so many other possible causes and even Malcolm suggests a Star D test. I still think this is temperature related and any sensor can break down with heat. Your fan control unit has little bearing on this from what you have told me. Other than the engine may have over heated at some stage and coused damage to a sensor. Especially hall sensors, they are very sensitive. I would go for a star diagnostics test first.

Your car can be checked by an indie who has a diagnostic test set. Where are you based.

You must ignore the post by eric about fans and low water reading lamps, he does not know how they work.

mb have diagnosed the problem as air in the fuel line, they have replaced the filter , cleaned out the fuel lines and charged me £290 for their trouble. So thats £600 in a month.

Car is going, I knew they were expensive to run but this is taking the ****.
