Hi

My mechanical lock on the driver side’s door had gone south for quite sometime ! I don’t really use it at all but if it is a not too difficult job, I will try to fix it and make it work again.

I have only one door lock and which is the one in trouble and it is on the driver’s side. I can’t turn the key at all after I insert the key into the lock’s cylinder ! Tried to spray WD – 40 and other cleaning agent into the key’s slot a couple of times but still the same, it just doesn’t work !

Is it possible to buy a whole cylinder unit and replace it and I can still use the keys I’m using now ?? I am a bit afraid to repair the lock as I’m a total stranger to that creature !

Any advise will be appreciated !

Thanks - Bernard

You can buy a new barrel for the lock, when you get it I will tell you how to fit it

This is a chassis number order that comes from the MB dealer only, they will want the VIN and possibly some ID, when you get it I will print off the fitting instructions

Hi Malcolm,

I just ordered a Key FOB from the dealer and they charged me HK$3,800 for a key, that is around 350 GBP for that. They are the only one dealer in Hong Kong – Zung Fu and they can charge whatever they want.

Is there any other way that I can take off the lock and take a look what is wrong with it ?? But I think it shall be kind of difficult as I know nothing about lock and I don't really want to start the fix but mess it up.

Any other suggestions or alternative ????

Thanks - Bernard

What about buying a lock and key from a scrap yard and fitting that, only down side, I think, is that you will have an extra key on your key ring.

Dear All

I learn from other forums that there may be other way of fixing the lock mechanism, will take a look when I have the time.

Yes, Dec, an extra key will be just fine and the reason why I want to fix it is that about half of a year ago, the remote system in my car didn’t work, and the mechanical lock did not work either, I have to call the lock specialist to come and opened up the car, it costs me a fortune at that time. So, your suggestion may be the last resort to make sure that I can get into the car in a situation like that again. I never use the key to open up the car anyway, so, I can just leave the “KEY” home for just in case !

Thanks
Bernard

If it is only the key will not turn in the barrel, will that same key unlock the tailgate/boot, one never knows if if has never worked if it is the correct key

Hi Malcolm

That is the old key FOB I have, I'm sure that this old key can open the driver side door as I did it before. With the same key, I can use it to open the trunk without any problems now.

So, It is the correct key for sure.

If the key can't turn either left or right in the barrel, does it mean that there is something wrong with the barrel ?? The reason for asking is I read some forums that indicate there is a linkage ( Dowel ??? ) between the back of the barrel and the lock housing, if this is also true for the lock mechanism for W202 car, will that be one of the possibility ?? I mean if the linkage between the back of the barrel to the lock is broken, will it be possible that I can’t move the key either clockwise or anticlockwise after I insert key into the barrel ????

Thanks Bernard

I have been thinking about that.

If the key does not move in the slightest, with no movement, then the barrel, if it moves a little then the linkage possibly.

It only takes one lever in the barrel to be stuck, and the key will not turn

If you would like the instructions for removing it, I can print off, soaking is a bowl of diesel may do the trick, WD40 is not good as it dries

Hi Malcolm,

I can't move the key even a little bit, that sounds like the barrel is gone, but again, it's kind of strange as I don't think I'd use the key to open the driver side door more than 10 times in the past 12 years ! It should be good as new !

Please PM me the instruction of removing it and I will try may be cleaning off the barrel or check is there anything I can do and bring it back to life !

My Email : bernard_kk_tam@hotmail.com

Thanks - Bernard

Hi

I just took off the Lock Barrel and there are 3 pins that holds the barrel onto the Barrel housing and the key Inserter ! If I want to take the barrel out, should I just punch out the pin No 2 & 3 or will it be easier to punch out the pin No 1 ??

Is there any special tools required to take off the pins ?? Or I can simply punch it out ??

I’m try to see I can clean the 10 links inside the barrel and make the lock works again !

Thanks for any instruction !

Bernard

I can look later in the day.

As it is out, why not emerge it on a cup of diesel and leave it in there for a couple of hour and it may come back to life

Hi Malcolm,

Can't get diesel in Hong Kong without a proper container for these dangerous goods !

Do you think WD - 40 gonna do the trick ? Although I spray plenty of WD - 40 last night there but no good news.

Shall wait for your further instruction of how to take the barrel out !

Thanks – Bernard

Dear All,

Last night, finally I managed to get a coke can of diesel and soak the lock barrel over night, this morning it was still the same, I couldn’t turn either left or right with my key !

This afternoon, I took the lock barrel to a locksmith and he fixed it for me for about 35 pounds. The locksmith tells me that all the alloy links ( I believed that there are 10 links inside the barrel and also, pin 1 in my picture should be the pin to open up the barrel ) were oxidized and he cleaned it all up for me.

I have a question in the beginning of the Fix, I used the mechanical lock less than 10 times during the past 12 years and why the hell could it be wrong ?? and the answer to my question is the question I asked myself ! The locksmith said that I have to use the mechanical lock from time to time, say once every week to keep it away from oxidation of the links.

Tonight, I fixed and put everything back together, I loss the original 4mm allen screw that fixed to the rear of the lock barrel, tried to get it in 2 Mercedes parts shop but they don’t carry this item in their stock and so, I brought M5 x 20mm Phillip Head screw to replace the original. Have had some hassle on doing it but finally get thru with it !

After all these work, I changed into a set of new carpet, set of 5 Mercedes’ original and the wiper too !!

But I still have one question, is the mechanical key operate only on the driver’s side door ??? I mean when I turn the key and open the door, the driver’s will be open but not the other three doors and the truck ?? Is that normal ?? I’m afraid that I mess up some of the wiring in the lock actuator in the door’s panel.

Thanks all – Bernard

That is normal with just the key.

Buy some of these caps that push into the lock to stop corrosion taking place

Hi Malcolm,

Thanks for your confirmation that this is normal for using the Mechanical Key ! Gonna have a good night sleep tonight !

Shall try to look for these Caps !

To be honest, I rather pay the 35 pounds per every 12 years than remind myself using the key to open up the door every Sunday ! LOL !!!!
