Quick ask, but I think I already know the answer. I am trying to code a secondhand cluster to a C240, 1999 model, and Star machine refuses to complete the task. I am assuming it is because the secondhand cluster has a higher mileage on it than the one I am trying to replace. Could anyone confirm this is the case??

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
Normally Star takes the info out of the old cluster and transferes it into the new one

The mileage is held in another module in the car, not just the cluster. If you try and replace the cluster with another and the milages don't match, its a no go.
I believe one has to code the "new" cluster with the correct mielage before fitting to the car.

This is all part of the transfer,, well it should be,, speedo fixer can wind any clock to any mileage, even Zero

The secondary odometer or mileage record in the "other" module in the car (I think it may be the EIS) cannot be altered, so if the cluster mileage doesn't match, coding won't be successful

We have imported a few late, low mileage 202 estates from Japan, but they obviously come with KM clusters. The first one I did had 97000km recorded, and I had a good secondhand cluster with only 33000 miles on it. This was from a C200, but coded up perfectly for the V6, and the mileage converted out to approx 56000 miles, which was lovely.

The second one I tried to do was a secondhand V6 cluster with 108000 miles on. The car I tried to fit it to had only covered 42000 KM. The message I got from the Star machine was something like "the unit is incompatible with the vehicle". I am assuming that you can only clock the miles in one direction, and that direction is up. I suppose you could find a nice man-in-a-van who could reset the miles to zero, and then you should be able to code it with no problems??

This must work,, someone buys a new cluster, they leave MB with the correct mileage,, there is not another means of recording the mileage to my knowledge,, I will find out
