w202 heat shield above catalysator

The heat shield above the exhaust pipe/catalysator (whats the term in english?) was completely loose just resting on top of the pipe and it made a really bad noise / shaking

So I went under the car trying to fix it back in place but was impossible due to all the rust so I simply removed it altogether. Im now wondering if it was smart to do, what purpose does it have? To protect some parts under the car, or just to spread the heat evenly (like when parking in grass etc)?

Catalysator,catalytic converter-pretty close.I would think that as it's above the cat. it is to protect the underside of your car(underseal etc.) from the high temperature.Personally,I would replace it soonest (even get a new one?)

Can you not refitt it with some large washers untill you get a new one!

Ah catalytic converter, thank you!
So I probably should put it back then. The problem is not the shield as much as the screws holding the bolts in place, they have almost rusted clean trough.. will need to find a way to secure it in position.

I had same problem with the heat shield that protects the center bearing in middle of prop shaft, two of the four bolts were rusted off, drilled and fixed it with 2 very short self tapping screws, rivets could be an alternative,

When you are drilling through the floor, use a stop on the drill for if the drill bit goe through too far, it will get wound up in any underfelt and you will not get it out
