Hi all,

Whenever I purchased my 1994 C200 earlier this year, I noticed that the heater controls did not light up when the lights were turned on. Turned out there wasn't any bulbs inserted!! Anyway, I put new bulbs in, but during the day, when headlights aren't required, the heater controls now 'pulse' on and off continuously. When the headlights are turned on, the controls are not lit. However, when driving tonight, I turned the rheostat down and guess what, the heater controls 'pulse'!! Could this be a faulty rheostat and if so, what sort of cost is a new one and could I install it myself? All other dash lights are working 100% as well as the other switch gear lights.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! ;)

Thanks

Johnny

Had the same problem from when I purchased my car was told by the garage the whole control unit was failing. Luckily I got mine done under there personal warranty and had a new unit fitted. Could have been looking at £400 plus :(

Anyone with any other suggestions? Don't fancy shelling out that amount for a new unit!! Have my suspicions though that it could be more simple (and les expensive) to sort!

Oh, and don't forget to vote on my poll. First time ever setting up a poll and I'm really excited!!!

Would've voted, but a bit clueless really. My main concern would be why the bulbs weren't there initially?

Has someone else (previous owner) had a problem????

Having said that, I'm going to vote in your poll beause you actually managed to set it up :)

Mine's the vote (Solo so far)

That part is wicked expensive. I would think about the auto breaker/dismantler/recycler/junkyard before buying from the dealer. I was pricing these yesterday and it seems most websites list refurbished units. Definitely pull it yourself and see if you can't find broken wires, dirty contacts, etc. that might solve your problem.

Hi Geo (is that Geoff or George?)

Thanks for the post. Yes I have the Haynes manual. Will dig it out today and have a shiftie at it. Trouble is, whenever I take anything apart and put it back together again, I always end up with one or two bits and pieces left over.................

Hi,
If your car has AC the unit is more expensive check with merc before dismissing buying new.
Mate of mine had no air con on similar vintage c class price new if i remember correctly the htr cntrl unit was £140 check e-bay he managed to get one off of there.
I think there are about six different ones so be careful if sourcing 2nd hand.
The unit does come apart with difficulty does sound like the track on reostat is damaged/dirty though.
Try searching for mercman in millbrook southampton i can almost guarentee they will have one very, very good they will do mail order give them the pt no. the guy runs it really knows mercs.
Maybe someone on here uses them already and could post you the tel. no.
sry could not be anymore help.
