anyone done this before ?

take a look (at the center of this rather large pic)

you'll see the familiar wearing of the cheap cloth or whatever it was that they used to cover the gear stick with, it shouldnt look like that imo, anyways, I've lived with it until recently but i've noticed a crack in the knob of the gear shift (where my fingers grab it, you can really feel the crack opening as you pull into reverse gear). So i toddled off to the dealer today to order a replacement knob+cover,

I don't know if it was his lack of understanding my poor swedish/english or whether its just a ripoff, but he claimed 1100 swedish kroners for the replacement cover+knob, which must be around 100uk pounds (i guess).

so... long story short, how to remove the old cover+knob ? i've successfully got the bottom of the cover up and that's about it, I have no idea how to remove the rest, so if you've done this before please tell me what I have to do

I'm fixing the car up for a sale :)
did some rust work today also, after buying the touchup paint from mercedes dealership, worked out really well actually ! worth the money.
cheers

Haynes manual says... " the knob can be removed from the lever by turning the retainer anticlockwise"
It looks to me like there is a collar under the gaiter, I assume this is the retainer that you turn to release the knob.

I can confirm this is correct but even with the collar released it can be jammed on there and possibly require a good tug to pull it away from the stick, i know this because when i changed mine it came away on the fourth tug which had been getting progressively harder and i beat myself in the mouth and gave myself a thick lip, be warned. Though i don,t think any one could be such a klutz as me lol.
