I had to call out the recovery people today because I could not get the ignition switch to rotate after a shopping trip. I tried both my wife's and my keys in the ignition, to no avail. The recovery mechanic tried putting the key in the barrel and tapping it lightly with a hammer, then just tapping the face of the barrel with the key removed - which did the trick. After driving home I have started it a couple of times in the normal way but it is 'hit and miss' as to whether the key turns 1st time of asking without jiggling it around.

Clearly, I need to effect a more reliable repair. Does anybody have any knowledge/advise to assist me on this, please?

Many thanks in anticipation.

You need to change the ignition switch,,and this can be ordered to match you cars keys etc.

They are easy to remove as long as the key still turns,,once it stops turning you can be in trouble as they can only be removed in Key1

When you get the new one I can give you a paper on how to change it

Many thanks for this, Malcolm. I will let you know when I have got the replacement part.

Apparently Euromerc.co.uk can supply a used one for £10, which is excellent. Will this have a separate key... which is not a problem... or do I have to reset my current key to it?

Would you be kind enough to supply me with your paper for replacing the lock, please?

Many thanks.

You will have to ask Nick at euromerc about the key, as yours will not fit.
Cars as from 08-96 to 05-97 have a transponder coil.

I need your Email address

Malcolm, I am really very much obliged to you for all your invaluable assistance - when do you ever sleep?!

I will speak to Nick - as it happens I live only 20 mins away from his Sherfield English location.

My e-mail address is: andyclement.uk@gmail.com.

Kindest regards
Andy

I don't have an 'Edit' option on my threads, although I am a registered user. Can you advise?

You only have an hour to edit a post, and the time has gone,, you could ask a mod to remove it

Malcolm. I have asked Nick about the key and his reply was: "The ignition switch is the part that bolts on to the barrel, so it does not need a key to work".

Are we talking about the same part, here? From my original problem of the key not turning it makes sense that it is the barrel that is at fault! (I am currently using the short emergency key in the ignition and not removing it when I leave the car so as to minimise the risk of the tumblers collapsing and preventing me from turning it to position 1 when I come to fix it).

Thanks again.
Andy

Nail varnish may not work for all, not always successful so let each coat dry properly and don’t force turn the key.

Holding anything that vibrates on the key can help as you try and turn it

No joy with the nail varnish. Have hot-wired it and have it running. Steeering lock is a pain though. The steering lock is part of the ignition, yes? If i force this and then change the barrell, will i have a new steering lock?

The problem is the the pin locks the steering column and you cannot get it out without grinding it all off

At the moment my options are limited. I cannot get the key to the 1 position (3 days now). Car is stuck outside work. Bank holiday weekend approaching. Head wrecked.
