..well, thats what I assume it is. Car is `97 C180 Elegance. Key fob has a small black dongle with 3 gold contacts either side at one end ( spare keys have a red one) I have found a socket that it probably goes into, under the dash ( when i changed the pollen filter) but, what do they do?

is it actually part of the key, or attached on a chain - do you need to plug the dongle in for the car to start?

I have an immobiliser on a cavalier I'm using whilst the 190 is collecting dust in the garden, and it its not plugged in the car wont engage any gears (it's an auto...)

Ah! I`ll have to have a play and annoy the neighbours. I did plug the dongle thing in once, but it didnt seem to make any difference when I locked the car ( flashed indicators, beeped etc), come to think of it, I probably pushed it in twice, so was back at square one. What difference does the red one make? Is it the Master key?

Allan

So, I had a play with it, it looks like it is used to turn the alarm off if you open the door without disabling the alarm first. The alarm functions normally afterwards.
