I replaced the batteries on my spare key which were completely dead.
The key now unlocks and locks the car but won't start it.
It goes to the 2nd position and all the lights come on but turning it to the starting postion does nothing???
The other key does still work!
I saw a thread on this somewhere but can't find it now I need it!!
PS: something I've been meaning to ask for ages: if I stand on the drivers side of the car I can open or close all the windows with the key but no from the other side! where's the sensor??

The sensors are built into the door handles in the form of a window that receives the IR signal,,its possible that the passenger one is faulty.

I take it that you have the all plastic key,,,the odd thing here is that you say it turns in the lock, but will not start the car.

When the key is in the ignition switch, it is powered from the car and not the internal batteries, and when the key is U/S they normally will not turn.

I would try cleaning the red end lens on the key first

I would say the key is a flip out single button type, has your spare key ever worked? Does your spare key have rattle to it?

Malcolm,a year or two ago(you probably won't remember as you were in Sweden at the critical time)I had exactly the same fault in that the key would go as far as to make the starter relay click, and no further. After a lot of anguish, and messing with Cole's brain it did turn out to be a faulty key.As for the window issue,I was convinced that this function only worked from the driver's side until I just went to try it  Glad I didn't jump in with that :D :D

Thanks for replies. It's a '98 C200 estate.
It's the "keyless" key (bigger then the new ones).
The car came with 2 proper keys not the flat batteryless one.
I was wondering if it needed resetting?
I thought maybe that little window thingy on the handle might have been it. Not sure that it's got one on the passenger door. Will check when I get home tonight.

Ok this is all very different,,,, you must take the car and both keys to someone with STAR and let them re program them,,it takes about ½ an hour
