Hi all,

I need people views on this. I am planning to dub my car for stance.

I was planning to put on deep 18s on my w202 but a mate said to put on banded steelies because they are cheaper.

I have looked into this, got 4 normal 16x7 ET37 Steelies in my garage. (Came with the car, while having Merak 16s on).

FaceBook Image

Price wise I'm ok with compared to the 18s.

Making the steels wider is not issues - got the width I want.

My problem is the lowering...

If the fronts are on 205/40/16 16x8 and the rears on say 215/40/16 16x9, how far can I lower my car. Main concern is the height from floor to underbody?

Thanks

Rai

As above.

The middle number (40) is the aspect ratio (profile). So, a 215/40 tyre has a tyre wall size 40% of 215. You must keep the diameter of the tyres the same, so as the tyre goes wider, or narrower, you must have a consequently different aspect ratio if mixing widths front and rear.

That is what I thought at first, but it is only illegal if the tyre threads sticks out from the arch.

im not sure where you got that information but i found some contact information for a police force (not sure which one) and asked the question. their traffic department looked through the relevant regulations and sent me an e-mail attachment from the british tyre manufacturers association, the general jist of which i have cut and paste here (obviously without the pictures etc)

The BTMA is becoming increasingly concerned at the number of cars on British roads where the tyres fitted
are too narrow for the wheel rim widths or conversely the wheel rims are too wide
for the tyres. (Often
referred to as the “Euro Look”) This trend is believed to be a fashion statement, but leads to serious risks in
road safety.

The tyre in this illustration is stretched onto a
rim which is too wide,
causing
excessive distortion of the tyre sidewall.
This is potentially
very dangerous and could
lead to a p
remature tyre failure. There is
also a
real risk of the tyre being easily dislodged from
the wheel rim.
Consumers are urged to consult a tyre expert or
the relevant tyre manufacturer before changing tyre and
wheel sizes to ensure compatibility of the two components for the vehicle application.
Note
: A change to the original vehicle specification could invalidate your motor insurance. Consult with your
mot
or insurer prior to any vehicle modification.
Applicable legislation includes Construction & Use Regulation 63 re bodywork and spray suppression and
the Road Traffic Act section 40 (vehicle in dangerous condition
