I understand that the wiper mechanisms on W202s have a tendency to failure and that replacements are in the region of £800:shock:. I've also read that merc dealers don't have any greasing in their servicing schedules which seems crazy to me considering their costly replacements and frequency of failure. Does anybody have any idea how to grease the wiper motor mechanism, what lubrication to use and how many people have had the unit go on their C Class?

This should help,http://202tech.mkosonen.com/howto/wiper.html.
To avoid failure you should never run the wipers on a dry screen or before freeing a frozen wiper blade as this puts an incredible strain on the gearbox, all the drive being through a nylon gear which will slip on its shaft or strip if overloaded.
Don't know the frequency of failure, but it comes up often on this and other MB forums.

There seems to be several methods (for some unknown reason) by which the large 'turtle shell' cover is attached. Mine unfortunately hasn't got the tabs but is secured by a screw from underneath, which would necessitate complete removal of the unit to remove it. I got round this the lazy way by drilling a 3/8 hole in the cover and squirting in spray grease, then just put a rubber grommet in the hole. Doesn't look too obtrusive.

Arrrrgghghhhhhhhh!! I've broken my W202 wiper cover...help

Whilst attempting to get the wiper turtle cover off I've broken it in half and now the wiper mechanism is open to the elements. I understand that Merc don't sell them separately and that I'm gonna have to buy a whole mechanism to replace it which at £800 is insane for a poxy piece of plastic. I also called Mercman who told me the same thing! Does anyone have a spare or know of a breakers who does??? NIGHTMARE......

Get some black electronic insulating tape. Clean and dry the two halves of the broken turtle cover and put it back on the mechanism.
Then tape along the crack and rub the tape vigorously, this will generate heat and make the tape stick better and then “bandage” the cover tightly to the mechanism at the bottom and around the “shoulder” area, the cover is a very snug fit, it is ABS plastic and so should have retain its original shape. This will give you time to source a replacement.

Regarding the MB dealers, this is there rip off and unhelpful nature at work, personally I would kick up a fuss, particularly if it were a dealer that I use regularly and point out that the part is obtainable if the really wanted to be helpful. 60 in the link… http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=202018&M=111920&GA=722421&VIN=2020182f218560&CT=F&cat=44V&SID=82&SGR=120&SGN=04

When you eventually get a replacement, cut a 3 or 4mm section out of the center of the “ring” in the neck of the cover, this will allow you to remove the cover without removing the wiper arm, and allows easy and quick access to the mechanism for regular greasing 3 or 4 times a year and turns the task into a 5 minute job.

Eh ? The cap part no 2028240249 is listed at 7.18 euros. Order one from your dealer.

BTW the W202 has almost 100% parts availability.

The ones on my W124 and W202 both just pull off, no screws.

Hi big x

How much force is involved to unclip the 'turtle shell' cover? Are finger tips sufficient? What about the amount of finger pressure required?

I'm surprised 'growla666' managed to break his cover because it does not feel like a flimsy moulding.

I levered it off with a couple of screwdrivers. If it's not been off before it might be tight.
As long as you apply even upward pressure I don't see how it could break.
To be honest I can't actually remember any dramas at all it just came off.
I lubed the moving parts with white grease.

I wonder if a pair of plastic tyre levels, the type used on bicycle wheels, would do to lever off the shell?

hot water or a dose of hairdryer should make it a bit more supple.

i've got a working motor if you need it.

You don't need any tools, just pull it off. I've done countless amounts of these over 13 years & never heard of a "stuck" one.
