270cdi belt

Hi jib,

I looked at changing mine 2 weeks ago, it looks like a real stinker!. There is a tensioner at about 2 O,clock from the crankshaft. It seems you turn part of it with a torx bit to release tension but as it is so hard to see, I dont even know what size it is. Dont think it would be any easier from below but you might be able to see the tensioner from there. I gave up but I was only looking at a precautionary change. Someone must have changed one, so tell us how ! .

I thought the process, well it would be easy if there was some space at the front to do it, but there isnt, I have multipul cuts that are now infected because I tried but gave up in the end.

Ive read somewhere 8 hours to change!!!! so I can only assume the front end comes off, or Mercedes employ skinny women to do the job.

Ive searched everywhere and cant find a solution, I will ring Mercedes tomorrow and ask them. They might put me on to the skinny bird they employ to change W203 V belts!!!

According to WIS one must first remove;
trim panels on the cylinder head
viscous fan clutch
fan shroud

Grazed knuckles are optional but probably inevitable! :)

Its rediculously tight but can be done with a short double hex 17mm socket on a knuckle bar on the tensioner, ive had many a cut and sore doing these!!

Thanks for the advice people. Ive just reinstalled WIS after removing it a few days ago, this time I decided to spend some time using it this morning and found it quite useful.

Do it from underneath.

No need to remove any fan shroud. It is tight but possible.

Try an a-class belt. The a 270cdi is easy compared!
