Hi guys.

About a week ago the engine light came on my dash board. I drove home as I was not too far away and turned the engine off. I started it again about 5 mins later and the light was off and as far as I could tell everything was ok. The next morning I was driving to work and realised that the indicators were not working. Upon further inspection I realised that the rev counter and the speedometer were not moving (it was very early which is why it took a while to notice). I pulled over and turned the car off. It then took several turns of the key to turn it back on again but when it turned on it was running fine. I since have been told that this is emergency or limp mode. One of my colleagues had a diagnostics machine and when we plugged it in it said that there was a problem with the max air flow.

Since then I seem to be in limp mode every time I start the car after a long period of inactivity. I asked the garage if it just needed to be cleaned or if they had to replace it and they said they would have to charge me £215 to replace it.

Does it really have to be replaced or can it just be cleaned and if so can I do either myself.

Thanks in advance.

Although the engine logged the MAF sensor, this may not be the issue. The engine ECU will limp the engine via the MAF by removing its signal wire, logging a fault code.

I would have it investigated by a MB specialist who has STAR.

I can recommend 2 good indies in Bristol or as I live in Bristol, you can drop it off at my house and I will take it to work with me and take a look for you. PM me if you need any help.

Cheers Steve.

Well that doesn't sound as small a job as I first thought. Probably a stupid question as it is exploratory work but any idea on price?
